What is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light photo facial, is a thirty minute procedure in which intense pulses of light from a laser are used to penetrate deep into the skin. IPL™ photo rejuvenation then causes collagen and blood vessels below the epidermis to constrict, reducing redness and age lines.

What parts of the body is IPL used on?

IPL is effective on fine lines, particularly around the eyes and mouth, shallow acne scars, age spots, pigmented lesions, broken blood vessels, and rosacea. This procedure is thought to reduce the appearance of large pores, dark under eye circles, and chronic facial redness. It is also used to treat sun damage on the face, neck, arms, chest, and back of the hands.

How does IPL work?

A handheld device is passed across the skin delivering pulses of broad spectrum light to the deep layers of the skin. Since the handheld device employs a light to influence the skin on a molecular level,  there is no need for any incisions or injections. You can think of it like a blinking flashlight, sending out scattered wavelengths of light, making an IPL very targeted for specific problem areas or skin concerns.

Is there downtime?

The downtime for a photofacial treatment is very minimal, and most recipients can return to their daily activities directly after the session. In the days following the treatment, discolorations in the skin will appear darker and new spots may occur. The discolorations may also have a crust-like texture. The skin is simply bringing to the surface the visible and invisible pigment deposits so they can be flushed out.

Please avoid excessive sun exposure for two weeks following your session. When outdoors, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30, or higher, and wear protective clothing.

How long does IPL take to heal?

  • Makeup can be used starting right after the treatment, as long as it is applied and removed very gently.
  • Rarely, there is bruising, which can take 1-2 weeks to heal.
  • For freckles and age spots, it is normal for the spots to look darker for 3-7 days.
  • Crusting can occur, which may last up to ten days.

Does IPL hurt?

Patients report feeling a sting or a sensation like a rubber band snapping.
